Masala was a dish "invented" in the UK to satisfy the UK palate for a mild curry.

As it says on Wikipedia

There is no standard recipe for chicken tikka masala; a survey found that of 48 different recipes, the only common ingredient was chicken. The sauce usually includes tomatoes (frequently as purée), cream, coconut cream and various spices. The sauce or chicken pieces (or both) are coloured orange using foodstuffs such as turmeric powder, paprika powder or tomato purée, or food dye.[
Masala simply means a mix of spices - as for variants in cooking methods of Tandoori, it's simply personal choice.

for years i used yoghurt with a blend of tandoori spices but found too much watery liquid would come out of the chicken when baked so i started using just the tandoori paste mixed with oil - i use sunflower because thats what i use in cooking and the whole family prefer it like that - its drier and very tasty
