I made for too much onion gravy yesterday and left the rest in a pyrex dish. I popped it in a cold oven to cool and, unfortunately, forgot to put it in the fridge.

I have only just remembered it's in the oven. Will it be ok to re-heat and serve it again tonight. I know that my Mum would say.......'No'.

What do you think?

Brain's! (oops)
Got some from the butcher in my freezer, no gravy
Have you a family recipe?
No family recipe, Daisy. We just get them from the butchers shop.

I presume you are talking to Yont, Daisy. I certainly don't have a family recipe.

I would have thrown it away years ago.

Ask the lady of the house Tony
Savoury Ducks is right Tilly. They have curry 'sauce' on their chips I Brummingham. No class. Now tripe and onions is the thing. Make you limp in the right places and rigid in others. I am not talking about venues.
Corned Beef Rissoles all round.
Im glad I ain't a brummy then, Togo ;-)
I've never had a curry in my life.

Just asked her, Daisy. She say's none that she knows of.
I re-heat rice all the time. Never done me any harm.

Then you must cool it properly, Chrissa. It's the cooling bit that's important.

Togo, never had a Corned Beef Rissole. Corned Beef fritters, yes. Rissole, never.
Isn't Uncle Ben's rice already cooked and then you are re-heating it in the microwave ?.

The cooling process stops the bacteria from forming. It's when it's left to cool down on its own. That's when the bacteria form. They then multiply when it is reheated.

Uncle Ben's must be industrially cooled.
Bacillus cereus, Rsvp. or RIP on a bad day ..having suffered from the fried rice bug twice each time at the hands of 'professionals' I strongly recommend that nobody eats rice that hasn't been refrigerated for more than 1 day. You can easily lose 5 kilos though.
B. cereus grows on starchy food, I think onion gravy will be OK until you can see mould growing on it.
Joking aside all. Rice that has not been kept refrigerated and then reheated properly is very likely to make you ill. I think it is maybe the high protein level that allows fast development of bacteria. Or something like that. The pre packed ready to cook rice is produced and packaged in very well controlled conditions. I hope. M&S microwave rice is bob on.

I had dreadful food poisoning once, after a Chinese takeaway. I was so ill, I though I was going to die. I had plain boiled rice and Mr T had fried rice. I blamed the plain boiled rice. Gawd, I was ill for days. A horrible experience. I haven't had a Chinese take away since that day.
My understanding is you can always reheat "veggie" anything but would be dubious in reheating any kind of "meat".
I use Veetee Rice and find that one pack does me for two meals. After I cook it for the first meal, I place the remainder straight in the fridge to cool down. It's fine.
Question Author
My fear about heating onion gravy comes from my Mum who was always sure that the onions would go sour. I don't know where she got that from but it has obviously rubbed off onto me.

Do onions go sour?
Question Author
Chrissa, cooling the rice quickly is what's important. You obviously do the right thing.
