Can anyone recommend any retailer in North East England, who have a good selection of American style fridge freezers to look at, before buying. I know that there are plenty of listings on the Internet, but I would really like to check some out "in the flesh". Many thanks in advance.

We got ours from Curry's - assuming you have one in your area?
They had a decent selection in store, but, as is the norm these days there is more choice online.
This is ours

My choice would always be John Lewis...ring your nearest branch and ask how many they have on display. They even have own-brand ones.....

I know this isn't exactly an answer to your question. But I thought I'd mention we had GE one for twenty years. It was great, we had to replace it early this year sadly, with a different make. This time we went for one without the water dispenser and ice maker.
May I suggest - if you do decide on a model you like, before you buy it, please check the consumption ratings. Some American models cost a fortune to run, since they do not all have the thickest most efficient insulation.
I had one some time ago which cost me 50p per day to run. The next one ( german) cost me under 2p per day to run.
