Buttermilk substitute?

A recipe I was going to do says to use buttermilk, but I dont have any. Can I use regular milk or is there a reason for specifying buttermilk??

buttermilk is fairly sour. Could you put some lemon juice in ordinary milk?
Add lemon juice to milk as sandyRoe suggested. :)

How much lemon juice?? (the recipe is banana muffins btw)
A tablespoon should do it :)
A tablespoon of white vinegar or lemon juice in a cup, fill cup with milk, let it stand for five minutes....job done...according to a site I just googled :)

I have found a lot of disagreement on what Buttermilk is.
I have a recipe for scones that calls or buttermilk, I use natural yoghurt, it always works fine
