So long since I made one that I can't remember if you're supposed to put an egg in the mash that goes on the top - yes or no? Thanks.

Dunno whether you're supposed to or not, but i never do. I do put grated cheese on though.

i also mix a bit of mustard in the mash too, to give it a bit of welly.
i don't with cottage but i do when i make cheese and pot pie

I dont. I do vary it slightly though and also sometimes put mustard in mash or cheese on top. i love cottage pie!
I do beat an egg into the mash. Makes it light and fluffy when baked and also makes the top nice and crisp.

I've put an egg in it now (sure that's what my mother used to do) - no cheese though as they eat cheese with everything (I must go through at least ten packets of cheese a week).
