father's day food

im having the inlaws round for the weekend and wondering what to make for sunday lunch, any ideas? did think, bruschetta to start, then a lamb roast and finally crumble but all a bit boring. they are almost 70 and mother in law doesnt like anything spicy or un-plain! i love cooking and wanted to be more adventurous.

Pavlova is easy enough and can look like a lot of effort has gone into it

Perhaps upgrade the crumble idea with mini crumbles baked in ramekins in different flavours and varying the toppings by adding crushed gingernuts to one (good on rhubarb crumble) toasted oats to another (raspberry and apple) and maybe crushed hazelnuts in the crumble mix on peach or apricot with really good custard with proper vanilla

You could try making rosemary roast potatoes to go with the lamb. I would be surprised if someone 70 would like bruschetta (although I am basing this on my very unadventurous parents). Prawn cocktail is a boring but usually successful starter. You could make your own Marie Rose sauce and add some micro herbs to be adventurous. Crumble...always a favourite. Do they like nuts? You can add ground almonds to the mix and make a lovely marzipan flavour topping. Rhubarb and strawberry is out of the ordinary but still yummy. How lucky they are to have a lovely daughter in law like you!

If they like the food then better something they enjoy than a risk they won't or eating it to be polite.

Maybe little individual fruit tartlets and you could go a bit more fancy with a nice latice on top?

Maybe something like a rack of lamb rather than just a joint.

Maybe a nice homemade soup for a starter with a dab of creme fraiche on top (depending on what soup) and home made croutons if they would go?

I would play it safe, find out their favourite foods, and just serve it up beautifully!..........

You can't beat a good roast.

If you want to give them something different do it with the starters.

yes, a really nice roast will be great, they will enjoy it!.......the starter, keep it simple!......at their age they don't have a massive appetite, and so keep the sweet light too, maybe a fresh fruit salad, or a pavlova............

But they might not appreciate special. Whenever my late dad came to eat with us, he always wanted my cottage pie. It was dead boring I thought, but he loved it.
