We are having an engagement party soon and we want to serve finger food. I don't want to go down the route of Iceland party food, so would appreciate suggestions for canapés, and other such party food.

So far I have thought of blinis with smoked salmon paté.

Many thanks.

Just make a load of sausage rolls. You can't go wrong with a sausage roll. :)
I was actually reading a mag in a waiting room yesterday full of party food.

One that looked nice was mini baked potatoes. Just small salad spuds baked and then filled.

Mini yorkshires filled with rare roast beef and horseradish.

Will you be doing it yourself?

Yes, with the help of my mother.

I already have request for cake and trifle, so that will do for sweet things.
If you're doing blinis, they are also really good with a slice of smoked salmon and a dollop of cream cheese, with chopped chives and/or black pepper on top.
Drain some tinned apricot halves and dry them a bit with paper, fill with cottage cheese and top with half walnut. They are scrummy

I do a lot of party catering and these are my regular things:

Seared Tuna rolled in poppy seeds
Mini baked potatoes with soured cream and crumbled crispy pancetta
Thai mango and chilli lime cups
mini sticky sausages with mash and caramalised onions
Crab cakes with dipping sauce
Chilli prawns
Figs wrapped in proscuitto
Mozzarella, basil and tomato skewers
Crab cocktail shots
Gazpacho soup shots
Thai duck rice paper rolls with spicy dipping sauce
Scallop, black pudding and bacon skewers
Chive scones with cream cheese and smoked salmon
Mini arrancini (risotto balled stuffed with mozzarella and breadcrumbed) with spicy tomato dip
Filo tartlets with pepperonata

For sweet canapes

Mini pavlovas
Mini cheesecakes
Mars bar cake squares
Mini jam doughnuts

Hard to beat V&C's answers - starving now; but I like to do a 'healthy kebab' it's lean lamb mince mixed with spices, and I serve it sliced real thin with mini pittas & garlic dip - it's abs delish. If you want the recipe let me know & I'll dig it out.
This is a really easy recipe for bite size choux buns.
125 ml water
125ml milk
120g cubed unsalted butter
120g plain white flour
4 medium eggs
100g grated cheese (cheddar or gruyere)
pinch of pepper and pinch of paprika

1.Preheat oven to 200 degrees C, line 2 baking sheets with parchment
2. Put water, milk, butter and pinch of salt into pan, bring to boil.
3.Add flour and stir until you have a smooth dough. Turn down heat and continue to stir until dough pulls away from side of pan. Just a couple of minutes.
4.Transfer dough to large bowl and allow to cool for a minute. Beat eggs into dough one at a time. Add cheese, parika and pepper.
5. Put teaspoonfuls into little balls on parchment about 5cm apart/
6. Bake 15/20 minutes.

7. Let them cool and then make a tiny slit and fill with perhaps boursin cheese or whatever you fancy.
8. These can now be frozen for up to 3 months.

9. Take out required quantity and reheat in oven for 3/5 minutes. Serve hot.

This recipe is far easier than it sounds and makes about 40 bite size buns.
