I recently bought a jar of Nutella which says on the label it should be stored at room temperature. However I have had other preserves like jam that can go mouldy once opened if stored at room temperature for more than a week .
So I sent them an email for clarification and their answer was:

# I can confirm that Nutella is safe to keep out of the fridge once it has been opened #
What a useless answer ! No explanation or comment of why uniquely Nutella possesses the elixir of life deneid to other preserves like jam. Are they talking about days, weeks ,years ?

You would think they would have covered themselves by quoting some time limit. As it is if I have a medical problem in future I can always blame their product. I've got it in wriing.

If you put it in the fridge it will set!
I always keep nutella in the cupboard but I couldn't tell you if it lasts more than a week. Or a few days even =s haha!
It's a completely different product - doesn't contain fruit which is the part of jam that grows mould.
"How should Nutella® be stored?

Jars of Nutella® should be stored at room temperature. Keep the jar tightly closed and store in a cool, dry place to maintain maximum flavor. Do not refrigerate Nutella®, otherwise it will harden and become difficult to spread. Excessive heat will accelerate the loss of fresh flavor and may cause the oils found in Nutella® to separate.

How can I tell the freshness of my Nutella® jar?

The "Sell By" date that is stamped on the cap of every jar of Nutella® is the date that assures the best quality and freshness. After that date the product is still good for an additional three - four weeks."

Jams are fruity and out of the fridge mould can start to grow on them. However, I often keep marmalade and jam in a cupboard without incident. What is the worst that can happen. A bit of mould that you spoon out. Nutella is like a soft bar of chocolate if you like. It will not get a layer of mould. Trust them. I have had Nutella over the years and never experienced any kind of deterioration in the product. Nutella would be all out to protect themselves so the fact they say its safe should reassure you.
Mine's always in the cupboard, it's like Marmite, no need to refrigerate, it's not a preserve.
..and yes, it's years - the jar I just finished had a best before date of August 2010.
I'm confused, I store all my jams, marmalade etc opened in a kitchen cupboard. They've never gone mouldy in a week.
Youre like me Boxtops. I cant be bothered to look at sell by dates as a rule. I trust my nose.
How on earth did a jar of nutella get that much past it's sell by date?

They only last a few days in my house :)
