I want to make a large layered trifle for xmas and im racking my brain to think of what to layer it with.

The plan is....bottom layer of brandy soaked sponges with set jelly. Next layer would be angel delight. Then i'm not too sure....maybe some amoretto biscuits and then maybe a layer of mascapone (possibly sweetened) or thickly whipped cream.

The i'd start again but instead of using liquid jelly, i'd set it in a seperate bowl first then layer it up all mixed up and maybe pour some condensed milk over it.

Then a layer of custard then whipped cream for the top.

Need suggestions....going to get a large trifle bowl from Aldi later....i might however not bother with the trifle and keep goldfish in the bowl !!!! lol

Suggestions, hints and critisisms welcome

Sounds delicious, can I come round for a bowlful please?
I always do the bottom layer in sherry soaked sponges and broken amaretto biscuits. I never use jelly as many people are vegetarian. Fresh or frozen raspberries and custard topped with cream and sprinkled with broken cadbury's flakes. I know it all sounds rather sickly and yucky and YES it is. That's why it's all so yummy. Whichever way you do yours hammerman, ENJOY!!
i think it'll be tricky to do 2 layers of jelly
I do 2 layers of jelly quite often for parties. They look great. Buy youve got to let the first layer set before putting on the second which you should leave to cool as long as you possible can before it starts to set too. Traffic light jellies are all the rage at our family dos. Have fun experimenting and please send me a bit ..... :>)
For Halloween I used to put those gummie things into the jelly too.You could possibly add some finely diced marshmallows to look like snow. Have fun !!

when i said tricky i just thought that chopped up jelly would taste and look horrible! (especially if using a see through bowl)

no it wouldn't!
the joy of jelly is putting your spoon in and getting a lump of it which you then chew/suck. Chopped up jelly is like pre-chewed jelly!

lol but i still think it WOULD taste different too, i just can't explain how
Chopping jelly!!! Not never!!

Might as well chop up chips - horrid thought.
A layer of fruit? Sliced strawberries or mixed winter berries soaked in a touch of alcohol of some description...

The bottom jelly layer would be set as in a traditional trifle but i'd use a layer of "chopped up jelly" as another layer.

Any suggestions for other layers ?
I've done one with the sponge soaked in Baileys which was good.

Real, old fashioned trifle never has jelly in it, and is traditionally made with sherry. I make mine with either sliced swiss roll, or trifle sponges spread with jam on the bottom layer. I then soak the sponges with sherry. You can put a layer of crushed ratafia biscuits here if you like. Then I add a mixture of banana and either fresh or tinned strawberries, and finally a layer of custard. When the custard is cold you can spread a layer of whipped cream on top and decorate this as you like - with hundreds and thousands or glace cherries with angelica leaves.
Avoid Angel Delight like the plague - nasty artificial stuff!
One observation I have is that if you are going to all this effort then you must be able to serve a bit of each layer to your guests.

If you are going to create a 12" deep trifle that is unwieldy to serve and near on impossible to ensure everyone gets a piece of each layer without feeding them enough trifle to sink the Titanic.

For something that is easy to eat and serve, and consequently fully appreciated, you are better off not going for not too many layers but a wide bowl. IMHO.
This looked alright on this mornings programme, and has your amoretto biscuits in

Try a chocolate/orange trifle. From Bottom to top - Layer of trifle sponge cakes, well soaked in Cointreau, covered with 1 pint of orange jelly. Layer of tropical fruit cocktail, drained of juice. Layer of white vanilla blancmange. Layer of tinned orange segments. Layer of chocolate blancmange. Decorate top with more orange segments, fresh whipped double cream and sprinkle with crushed Cadbury's flake. Takes a couple of days to make and set, but well worth the effort. Delicious!
