preserving icing

Does anyone know if and how you can keep fondant icing off a cake.

if its already on the cake and the cake is fruit you can keep it in a tin for at least 12months if its sponge the cake wont last very long. if its just the icing wrap it in clingfilm and put in an air tight container in a dark place.
