a plain green bean excites me...

...enough to enjoy it in it's natural yummy glory, but my family think they are boring!
What can I do to make them more interesting?

(We are having salmon with parsley sauce and garlic roasties)

ooh i've got some sesame seeds - should i toast them first?
I do mine 2 ways:

1/ Cook the green beans until they are "al dente" and drain. Heat some olive oil, add some garlic and chilli if you like it spicy (oo-er!). Once that is sizzling, throw in the green beans and re heat through until they are as cooked as you like them.

2/ Again cook the beans until they are done enough for you and drain. Heat olive oil, garlic, either a tin of plum tomatoes or use fresh tomatoes and cook down for around 15 -20 mins. Add some fresh basil, add the beans and cook through.

it sounds delish v and v but i've no almonds :(
I love plain mayo on my runner beans (home grown, cut up in big chunks, not sliced, and certainly not over cooked!) YUMMY ...
Ann ...I would be cooking the beans, straining, adding a good sprinkling of ground pepper, a few tablespoonfuls of mayo...mixing together and re- heating before. serving. Beans in a cream sauce is the end result.

Crisgal...If you havn't got almonds...just leave them out. The beans will still taste good and will be different to just boiled beans.

Ron - Never thought of heating mayo, what a good idea! I always add black pepper though. Which brings me to another question - why do some restaurants/cafe insist on putting horrid white (or rather yellowy!) pepper in their cruets instead of black pepper. Does anyone really prefer white over black?

Ann... I have never considered myself to be a Macho man, although, as I am the cook in our house,Viv may agree that I am a Mayo one.

I use Mayo in all sorts of things. Left over vegetables sliced up and stirred with a few spoonfuls, along with a teaspoonfull of mixed herbs and then heated in the microwave for for five minutes, is great with any cold meat. We refer to it as 'Bungy' because you can 'bung-in' anything you like in the vegetable line and even add some grated cheese. Peas reheated with some mayo is also a good way to serve them with a roast meal.

Cook beans until nearly cooked. remove to a bowl. fry chopped mushrooms in fat of choice (I like butter) then toss the beans in the resulting yumminess.

i love white pepper! I prefer it in mashed spuds, carrot and swede, and anything pale - celery, chicken soup etc.
Also wonderful with lurpack on corn on the cob. Black pepper just wouldn't be the same as far as |I'm concerned.
I'll keep that for my italian dishes.
crisgal - what a disgusting thread. Green Beans are inedible and should be avoided at all costs. Yucky.

Wolf - No. 1 son goes mad for cut green beans, he plays with them for hours. Yours should try it!
