it only toasts on one side - the inside of the bagel - you are not supposed to toast the outside

I don't know, haven't got one, have enough trouble with mine only
browning in the middle. I think I prefer the old fashioned grill, even though it takes longer.

The bagel goes in as sliced halves so requires a setting that toasts the sliced side only.
