Is there some strange method of keeping sparkling wine sparkling with the aid of a spoon or something? I am sure I didn't dream this. Or a knitting needle perhaps? Anyone?

I seem to remember that you just leave a table spoon in the neck of the bottle. Never tried it myself.

The myth is a silver spoon in the neck. This is complete and utter nonsense.

Strangely a sparkling wine made by the champagne methode - i.e. Champagne, Cava, wines marked methode traditionelle or methode champenoise do retain their fizz quite well. It seems the carbon dioxide, which is heavier than air, forms a layer on the surface and the fizz stays in the wine.

Of course, you can buy a cap that fits in the neck of the wine, but it will be OK for a day if you just put it in the fridge

Gawd! One minute I'm glad I wasn't dreaming, and the next Pinotage is unspooning all me illusions. But the knitting needle - silver or simply plated - was presumably Mrs Ox's son, Boll???
I think knitting needles were used for something quite different, to do with disposing rather than keeping!
just drink it all - it ain't hard you know!
