can you tell me what my legal rights are on having your mail with your name on being opened at work, also on missing mail which you know has been sent but not recieved and lastly i have found envelopes in rubbish with my name on but have not been given the mail

In most companies mail is opened centrally and then distributed to the addressee. If someone is not passing on items relating to work then you should complain to your manager. If the items are personal then do not have them sent to you at work.
As above...

Also coming up to Christmas my other half gets sent stuff from contractors and he never sees it. The directors always manage to get it to their cars though..
you have no rights regarding email - the email service and internet/phone service belong entirely to your work. In fact, it would be wisest for everybody to assume their mail is being monitored. Is your organisation big enough to have a policy? If so,, it will all be in there.
