The next door neighbours came round today when I was out and trimmed the hedge between our houses. They're both nice people and I'd like to get them a present as a 'thank you'. I was thinking a bottle of wine for him, maybe one about a tenner, and flowers for her. How much should I spend on them?

You'll need more than a tenner for a nice bouquet, Sandy. £20.00?
Is it your hedge or theirs ? How much work do you reckon in hours ?
I wouldn`t worry to much about a massive bouquet of flowers - I`d just get one from the supermarket or local market.
You get some lovely flowers from Tesco - they do a lovely orchid plant for about £8 I have bought several and given them as gifts over the years.
*too*

I don't know who owns the hedge. In the past I used to trim my side and he would do his.
sandy, down here, some of the more creative florists offer a single stem or maybe a couple for around six to eight pounds and very creative - even in a pail....look for one of those, and there are some nice M&S wines for 10 and if you have their Sparks, 20% off for three.....
Half a hedge, maybe an hour or thereabouts. I'd say wine and flowers are probably being generous. If you go that way get a bunch or two from the local supermarket, it'll be cheaper. Or alternatively get a single decent wine for the pair of them to enjoy. Sunday newspapers/magazines often have good suggestions, or you could search for wine of the week here (if there are any recent ones).
I would buy them a plant for their garden.
Colombe, an Argie high altitude Malbec at M&S, 12 a bottle - buy 3 and 2 for you and one for them at a tenner a bottle. For a slightly cheaper option, their Dahlia is £8, again an Argie Malbec, and very tasty, buy in 3 and 20% off.....
Do they like wine, not everyone does. If you're going to buy wine I'd get them a bottle of fizz, not expensive stuff, most people enjoy a bottle of fizz.
The trouble with cut flowers in this weather is they just don't last, sunflowers would though, there are lots in the supermarkets at the moment too.
I wouldn't thank anyone for giving me a bottle of Malbec...
Malbec is lovely ...in Argentina. I have brought some lovely ones back from there but the range in the UK is very limited (a bit like South African wines - they keep the best ones for themselves). Do they drink white or red?
I think you're being extremely generous. I'd just do the hedge next time instead of giving gifts like that.
If you must give something, I think an orchid from the supermarket would be ok, as Islay suggested.
note to self....don't send ethandron a bottle of Malbec....

Blue Nun? that question remains open.
I'll drink anything if I like it, I'm not a wine snob, £20 or £2 a bottle, I e had good and bad of both. Now, blue nun, that's not bad chilled...
Didn't a £5 Asda Malbec get named best under-£15 wine recently?
Blue Nun? Yuk, I didn't know it even still existed.

They do drink wine. I've seen the empties in their glass bin.
The hedge is about 8' high and I'm not happy standing on a stepladder to level the top.
I'm thinking more a token of appreciation than anything else. I'll see what M&S have in the way of flowers tomorrow and get the wine there, too.
Sandy....go to Tesco or like Retro says buy a plant.
