My daughter, Miss Smith and her partner, Mr Jones, registered the birth of their son today. Both names are on the birth certificate and the baby will use the father s name. However, I maintain that legally he is still Baby Smith as the parents are not married. What is his name?

If he's registered as Baby Jones then that's his legal name. It doesn't matter that they are not married.
i was just going to put that
When the child’s name is registered, the parents can choose
whether the mother’s or the father’s surname is recorded on the
birth certificate. However, subsequent to registration, the child’s
surname on the birth certificate can only be changed from the
mother’s surname to the father’s surname. If the child was
registered with the father’s surname it is not possible to change
it to the mother’s surname except by Deed Poll, although this
would not result in a change to the birth certificate.
does it really matter or dont you like the father?
You don't actually have to use either name..
they can call him Theopolis P wildebeast the 3rd if they like, It's up to the parents to put what they want on the birth certificate.
Have I read somewhere of both parents registering a birth?
