I've found a baptism from 1746 to a John and Alphry Baldwin. Trying to locate their marriage, I've been unsuccessful. But - I've found a 1744 marriage for John Baldwin, but to an Ann Arnold. Both in Kent.

The location for the marriage is plausible, as is the date. However, I'm concerned that by assuming Ann and Alphry are the same person may be a 2 + 2 = 5 scenario.

Has anyone come across this name before, or know a website proving the link between Ann and Alphry?

Did you find the baptism on a secondary source site like the IGI on familysearch.org or have you actually looked at the primary source in the Kent CRO? It may be a transcription error .
using familysearch.org only 2 instances of the name Alphry turn up, both in the US census, however, as a default search it turns up mary instead of Alphry, as though mary has been mis-transcribed in the past as Alphry, which makes more sense than Ann .

Thanks Dot. On the first post, both the baptism and marriage were from the actual registers in Kent CRO - I'm here now! I also double checked them on the Bishops transcripts and they checked out OK. On the second, I agree Mary is more sense than Ann.

I suspect Alphry and Ann are the same person. But as there's a chance there were 2 John Baldwin's in the area, and Alphry really is Mary, I'm disinclined to make that assumption until I'm absolutely sure.

Thanks again for your assistance, anything else will help. However, I'm leaving Kent CRO now, so won't be able to reply again till later on tonight.
can you get a photocopy of the page if they allow it and copy it into here or email it m,e? have you checked to see if that parish is included in the IGI to see how it was transcribed?

Hi Dot - home now!

The child baptised was Sarah Baldwin. As it is, there were 2 Sarah's to John + Alphry, in 1746 and 1749 - the 1746 Sarah dying soon after birth.

Both are on IGI and the links are attached. I did get the original, but the copy was so poor, it would never take being scanned.
