Tracing my real father

I am 36 yrs old and am trying to find my real father.. I dont know if he knows that I exist as I think it was just a short relationship between my mum and him but my mum has given me his name and has told me a bit about him. I just dont know where to start looking. Does anyone have any advice?

Some previous answers have suggested that he might have moved to another country. Since you have his name and age, you can check with online background search services for the USA, Canada, and Mexico. Services like http://backgroundsearch.com will give some search information for free, which really helps when you are trying to locate someone by their name and age.
