Folk round here leave them on the pavement outside, and eventually one of the nomadic metal-collecting tribesmen come along and take it. Along with drain covers and anything in unlocked sheds.

^Same here. Or re-cycle (firms). Don't pay money to have it removed.
Leave it outside your house where I am and it would be gone the same day.
a scrappie will take it ( and the kids if you leave them out beside it )

I suppose in NI they would shoot it first

( sorry sorry bad taste joke - gets coat ... )
You're looking for a rag n bone n domestic appliances man, Sandy.
They've a very strong union so you'll probably have to drape something expired over the top of it and leave a few old shirts in the drum, just to fulfil conditions vis a vis job title/description rules.
Automatic gunfire no doubt, PP.
my council pick up such things for free but they've always disappeared by the time that they get here

Where I've lived, even on a council estate, if you were to leave a washing machine outside on the pavement you would have all the neighbours on your back, complaining. I must say, it's not something I have ever noticed, and I have lived in an up - market area.
I have back access road and I left mine outside my back gate. It was gone the same day.
* I have "never" lived in an up - market area.
Currys used to have a deal where if you bought your new washing machine from them they would take away your old one for you free. I dont know if they still do this though, worth a phone call.
We have rag and bone type collectors round here, come round with a loudhailer thing. I had an old washing machine next to the house (set back from the road) and by the time I had got out to tell them they could take it, it was already being wheeled away! Made me think twice about leaving anything out the front for any period of time that I didn't want to disappear!
They want them so they can weigh in the metal.
I tried to leave an old telly - one of those heavy ones with all the gubbins on the back - on the street, but didn't even get to the pavement before a passing stranger asked me (a) if I wanted a hand and (b) if I wanted the telly. I said I didn't, so he took it. Service at your front door.

I really hate not getting jokes...could explain your joke PP?
It's not a joke...it's just his strange general thinking.

We have at last emerged into the halcyon days of peace where neither innocent old washing machines, or innocent people, are shot without reason any more. However, if the said washing machine had somehow offended a figure of respect it would need to watch its back as recent events have shown.
Here's a tip - if you want to get rid of such a thing again, leave it on the pavement with a sign saying "For sale £5". It will go much faster than if you leave a notice saying "help yourself, free ". But you won't get a fiver through your letterbox.
take it you got a new one Sandy ?
