Two good friends of mine - the nephew and fiancée of my boyfriend, were on it.
Apparently one of the engines blew up and they had to emergency land - it's on Sky news but I don't have sky, so can get very little information as yet.

They were on their way to Norway.

All ok, but very shaken as they had to emergency evacuate.

What makes it even worse ismthatmtheynwere on their way to see a poorly 3 year old newly-diagnosed with a tumour.

This has been the worst couple of months, almost ever.

Not seen any news, Sal, but send you a cyber hug and a 'don't worry, it'll get better, chuck' message
shocking, but so long as they're okay.. you have to keep looking for positives, or it's all just sh*t

Everyone on board got off safely down the chutes. No fire inside the plane apparently.

So, once, again, could be a lot worse.

Thanks cris, I can't do links !
it didnt "blow up" it was a bird strike that cause an engine fire automatically extinguished this is a daily occurrence somewhere in the world.the aircraft is designed to fly on 1 engine in these cases

Not thought to be a terrorist attack, thank goodness.

Thumper, I said "blew up" cos I got a text at 9.30 from our niece who was shocked after hearing what had happened. News was still very vague at that point.

So,please excuse the over dramatics....
BA was always my faourite airline but not now, and I am not surprised, when I flew with them last December, they had to get an outside machine to start one of the engines, the cabin was freezing and misty, and once landed we had to wait for another machine to come and shut down the engine again, so no more.
thumper93 - how do you know it was a bird strike?

An update from SC who was on that flight - it was not a flight of birds as news reports are saying. There was a loud bang on the right by the emergency door and the plane stopped climbing, the pilot said part of the engine had come away. Just before landing the right engine burst into flames.

So thumper - you are wrong on both counts, After all a passenger actually on the plane should be in the (best) position to know?
It would have been a flippin big flock of birds to rip the engine cowling off although the popping sound sounds like an engine surge which does happen when you get a bird strike. There would also be blood everywhere. A "technical fault" is the official line at the moment.

All I can write is a first hand report from a passenger on the plane who I have just spoken to. They were scared, but are so grateful to be on land and safe. And unhurt.
The workload on the flightdeck must have been so heavy but those pilots are so well trained and calm, they would have immediately have gone through the drills without a second thought.

SC did say the captain and crew were all very professional.
A 747> 4 Engine plane can land safely on One Engine, a plane with 2 Engines, can land safely with one.

Maybe so twr- but I still wouldn't particularly relish being a passenger on one when it did..... :-)
We flew out from Manchester earlier last year, we waited inside the plane as there was a fault with Computer, 1 1/2hrs the plane left its stand & proceeded to the end of the runway ready for the off, I said to my wife, this plane will return to the stand as I did not think it was right, within 1/2hr the plane returned to the apron for another Computer to be fitted!!!!!!!!! what did you make of that??? We did take off & landed OK at Teneriffe.
Oh dear, probs with PIA to Manchester now. Gone to Stansted which is the anti-hyjack airport. It`s all happening today...Hope it doesn`t go in 3s as I`m taking to the skies tonight.
Have you sat on a plane that has been hit by lightening Bbbananas? not a very nice thing. but it does wake you up, its a regular thing.
