There is a verse in the Bible book of Ecclesiastes that may seem to be a very strange statement to some readers: A good reputation is better than expensive pleasures, the day someone dies is better than the day they were born.

They are indeed very strange statements.
A good reputation is better than expensive pleasures? I think that one is very much open for debate.
The day someone dies is better than they day they were born? Only if you are someone who has faith in some sort of afterlife. I can tell you this -that I am 100% certain that I regard the day I was born as a far far better day than that inevitable day when i finally shuffle off this mortal coil, and the same applies to the days of birth of my kids, too. You do speak nonsense.
"It is better to go to a funeral than to a party?" Really? Not sure I agree with that sentiment either - all things being equal I would rather be at a party than a funeral, and of those funerals I have attended recently, I am pretty sure those people for whom the funeral was being held would far rather have been at a party too.
Death cannot be better than life, unless the life you are living is so miserable, so painful, your quality of life so fundamentally compromised that each day represents a living agony, or where your personal dignity has completely disappeared - then I could imagine people might welcome the release from such torment, and non-existence might seem preferable.
Otherwise, Life beats death hands down.

GL I think most well adjusted sensible with basic observational skills are aware that nobody lives forever, after all when did you last meet someone over 120 years of age. For some people death can be better than life, no more worrying whether they will be saved and sit at god's right hand...they will know...or not.
Death can be a welcome relief from agonising pain in a hopeless health situation. Maybe the Church should recognise this and allow euthanasia in those cases. It is supposed to be the will of God after all.

I think that is simply wrong for the vast majority of people.Days of birth should be celebrated, living should be celebrated. Only when the burden of living for an individual exceeds their quality of life should that persons death be celebrated.
Other commentators have said this before, but there is a sense that the more fundamentalist abrahamic religions celebrate, venerate and long for death - which is creepy and weird, and is why such people should never ever be allowed anywhere near the levers of power.....

No,every person ways can make a notable name or outstanding ability, but where is that person now, Gone and some probably forgotten. That is not being morbid. Most people cannot even name their great-grandparents or tell where they were born and buried. So you can see why Solomon realistically saw vanity in human undertakings and efforts.—Ecclesiastes 1:9-11.
