Why is it whenever I eat porridge immediately afterwards I crave white buttered bread or potatoes? It's not just me as 3 friends have the same craving!

We're not pregnant and this only happens with porridge and no other carb does this.

Does this happen to you and if so why does it happen?

It's all down to the bread manufacturers they pop something in the porridge
I have porridge every morning for breakfast and it never happens to me I'm afraid
Whenever I have it, I feel full for hours.
i dunno, but perhaps because they are all starchy foods?
I am an avid porridger. Never had any cravings after. Keeps you fuller up until much longer than cereals toast etc I find.

Those hovis workers certainly are a cunning bunch whiskeryron :)

This is really weird as it's not a hunger feeling but more a taste craving.

I think when I next see my mother I'll ask her did she ever get a porridge and potato/bread craving when she was pregnant with me.

Wouldn't it be weird if she said yes.
Porridge never fills me up or keeps me going. I'm much better off with a protein breakfast.
Its been shown that starchy carbs can leave you craving more carbs.
All I ever crave after a bowl of porridge is a strong cuppa tea.

But it's weird that only porridge does this ant potatoes/bread/pizzas/pasta or rice.

I'll tell you what though after a carb heavy meal I always crave a cigarette especially after bread or porridge.

The brains workings really are weird and wonderful.
Tonight I craved Ritter Sport Choc and hazelnuts, I gave in
I always fancy a ciggie after eating chocolate or drinking coffee, so I avoid these at work/commuting/on a plane etc!
I'm just watching Tell me I'm a Doctor and they were researching carbs and starch. The upshot was to cook, cool and reheat carbs such as potatoes and pasta to make them better for you. Maybe its worth trying it with your breakfast? Try cooking your porridge now and reheating it in the morning. See if it has the same effect or whether the reduction in starch takes away the craving. Worth a try? :-)

Maydup what happens to the carb once you cook/cool/reheat it to make it better for you?
I've no idea re your particular combination - but if I have a cooked breakfast, I crave chocolate about an hour afterwards :-(
Hi H. It reduces the sugar rush since the starch changes shape on cooling. Explained here.
