Hmm, why would Andy leave a large sum of money next to that wall for a ghost?

leg pulling with bells on :)

Never heard this before, i think your friend is very wrong!
What about all the relationships Red has with other inmates? Did they imagine him as well??
Total garbage. Watch the film and you'll see what I mean.
The film is adapted from the novella 'Rita Hayworth - The Shawshank Redemption' told in the first person by Red, who as the nickname infers, is caucasian, with red hair - a fact overlooked by the film casting people - to no detriment of the movie what ever.

The book is one of the few seriously good adaptations of King's work - it is a wonderful story of optimism, and the genuine good to be found in even the worst places.

Your friend has either misunderstood the film, or is simply teasing you - but rest assured, Red is real - well, in the novella and film anyway!
I thought he was nicknamed Red because his surname was Redding?

?
In the film yes , to explain why he was called Red (as he didn't have red hair).
One of my favourite fils. Especially the narrative.
And a ghost couldn't carve his initials in the woodwork, or work in a supermarket??!!
