Hi everyone, my daughter is 3.5yrs old and goes to nursery full time, she has been out of nappies since she was 2.5. She is happy and settled in her preschool class yet for the past week or two her pants have been wet & smelly when i go to collect her. I am assured by her and also the teachers that she isnt worried or anxious and I am trying to just put it down to a "phase" but just wondered if anyone else had similar experiences or words of advice. I am also curious whether she is just getting engrossed and forgetting to go altho i remind her before i leave in the morning. At the moment I am just dealing with it lightheartedly saying little accidents dont matter because i dont want to make a big fuss of it so hopefully i am doing the right thing, any info much appreciated, thanks.

This is common at this age - little ones do get absorbed in what they are doing, and haven't learned not to over-ride the signal to urinate.

If your daughter is 'spotting' rather than actually wetting her knickers, this may be why the urine is drying on her, and then starting to smell.

Have a quiet word with the staff and ask them to gently remind her about every hour or so to see if she needs to go. In addition, send a pair of clean knickers and ask them to change her at dinner time id she has spotted, to keep her fresh and avoid any odours or rashes.

She will grow out of this - they all do!

Thank you so much, she is my only child so I am learning all the time as well! You have given me the reassurance I need that its hopefully just down to her age.

You are most welcome - glad to help.

We have three daughters - the oldest two work in child care, and my wife is an ex Primary head, so from personal and profeesional experiencce, i can reassure you that this is common, and your little one will grow out of it.

Come back when she's a teenager .......!

Eeek I had the exact same thing happen to my little girl. She was happy etc, just a busy little thing who forgot and, like Andy says, the spotting dries so that by the time I picked her up from school she was pretty whiffy. Have you considered letting her pick out some new nicks and a little bag; she can perhaps be given time at nursery to change her clothing by herself if she needs to. The nursery sound very understanding which is a bonus.

I hate to worry you but with my daughter it lasted well into Reception. There was nothing anyone could do; it just takes a lot of patience and understanding which you clearly have. Ohhhh those memories! Good luck.
