No you should speek to your doctor or health visitor,

if this has been happening for weeks and weeks then no its not ok, the thing with breast fed babies is that because there is no waste in our breast milk they only poo what they dont need for energy. So if s/he is growing well there very well maybe no poo for a while.

this is a health visitor problem, does your surgery not run a clinic???

thanks for your replies. have spoken to h.v and g.p both said to give him cooled boiled water. he either doesnt like water or doesnt like a bottle. i dont particularily want to give him a bottle anyway. they also said to give him prune juice but when he does go he is not constipated i think prune juice would only give him pains in his tummy.
hilary if you eat prunes instead that should help him, mums a midwife and thats what she told me. you could also feed him straight from a cup.

Have been drinking Prune juice myself thanks for your advice though. this is the first time I have used this site or any site actually. it is really good and reassuring to get other opinions. Thanks

dear hillary i am a midwife and the second awnser (i think) is correct, some breast fed babies will only poo weekly and this quite acceptable,as long as they are gaining weight and you are only breastfeeding no problems. (breast fed babies dont get constipated)

My first son had the same 'complaint' as yours! However, after x-rays and other untold intrusive things, we summized that he was using all the milk for his body, rather than for excess. So, I would say, that unless his nappy produces pellets or hard stools, don't worry!

He is 9yrs old now and poos every day!!! LOL

Hi, I breast fed my daughter until she was one. she would not take a bottle either but there were occasions I had to get water in her (she was dehydrated due to a tummy bug) and I used a syringe. A friend of mine (who is a paediatric nurse) had the same problem and her daughter also breastfed went for 2 weeks at a time without a poo. She would give her a small amount of water in a syringe with sugar dissolved in it. Check with your health visitor for advice first but if the baby is uncomfortable it may be a way of moving things along!
