Spelling

Can anyone help? What kind of words do British school children learn to spell between the ages of 8 and 10 ? I remember doing spelling tests a lot at that age but can't remember any examples.

My son has just started middle school (age 8) and the words he brought home last week included history, package, manage, advantage, property, silence, absent and parent.

Hope this helps! x

British School children learn to spell????? (Only joking, sorry, couldn't resist!)

I think if you pop to the library, or to WHSmiths, you'll find a book full of spelling lists organised by key stage or chronological level.  I have one for my kids and I think it is called: "Schonnell's essential spelling lists age 5-11", there are others aswellorganised for one age group at a time:  "WHSmith spelling lists for nine year olds"

eg, words for ten year olds:  stain, already, harvest, manage, beneath, beautiful, carefully etc etc etc.

Sorry about the quip at the beginning, you just hear such stories in the press re school.  It must a mine field for parents with kids in school.  It must be tough trying to make sure they are up on everything they should be... Good luck with the spellings. I remember doing spelling tests too, and times table tests.  It's good to hear there are still schools that do them.
