'your childrens 'keep' money

does your kids give you money for there keep?
has it gone up with inflation?
stayed the same for years?
OR-do not take anything
they feed themselves etc.
some of my sons friends think i am mean cos' i take £220 a month off him for his keep,in that he gets,his meals,sandwiches every day,washing,has use of car

For £55 a week he'd get a grotty bedsit. He'd then have to pay for electricity, heating, TV, and all the other things that eat up money.
He's getting a bargain.

Depends what he earns really. Way back in 1983 I paid £60 a month out of my £220 a month take home pay - I though that was fair - all I had to pay for was my bus fares and entertainment etc.

If they are of an age when they are earning then fair enough, a contribution to the household expenses is right. They'd have to pay if they went out into the world on their own. Just over £50 a week ? Seems reasonable to me. I think that's a great deal for them. Not taking any more in are you ?

I guess I pay keep in a way. I live with my Dad and pay half of everything, rent, all bills and I do the buying of certain household items whist he buys most the food. I do my own washing and all the cleaning though. Your sons got it easy!

All adult children living at home and earning should pay their way.
They should know how much the bills are and contribute their fair share. It is essential to learning the true cost of living.

Of course, if the parents don't need the money, they can stash it away as a surprise gift for when the child does eventually leave.

No, she doesn't ,and its annoying me now no end. She's 6 for heavens sake, about time she stopped sponging off me and earned her keep, i won't keep her in the lap of luxury for ever for nowt- she better shape up or ship out!

I never paid as much as that when living at home.... but it depends how much he earns.
Guess its a good thing for him to understand that living costs money... and he will learn to appreciate money too.
If he is working then yes he should pay towards his upkeep...

he is 24,but works damn hard,plus studying,he works in a science lab at the uni.and gets a whole lot more than i get,he is usually left with about £800/£900.for the month and all he has to buy is diesel,entertainment,clothes,concert tickets,holidays.

That said the odd hint about how much more freedom a quarter century guy would have, wouldn't go amiss then. At that age i'd have thought they'd want somewhere private to bring back boy or girlfriends. You know, for tea and stuff.
