What date does an employee's tax records dueto be returned(in the UK)? Also, which forms (numbers/letters if possible) should I be waiting for from my employer and government allowance agencies etc? I have tried the Inland Revenue site and I am still confused on the process. How do I give the information (which forms should know of) to get processed? How do I find information on how to make claims for expenses etc? Is there a pack you can get that will tell you the "how to complete your tax assessment for beginners"? Is there any sites that tell you what you can claim on for expenses for different employee occupations? Please give me any UK Tax advice as I am new to it all, and don't get straight answers from people I ask - It should be a simple process for me as I am not doing self-assessment (ie. I am only an employee/individual return. Thanks in advance.

Is it a P60 from your current employer at the end of the financial year, around the start of April???
Should you always get a P45 when you leave a job? What if it was casual work for a few days???

The tax year ends on April 5th. You have until January 31st the following year to file a tax return and pay any tax. Most people are on PAYE so it happens as you go along and you shouldn't have to worry. A P60 is statement of earnings and tax deducted by your employer (issued end of tax year). It is only relevant if you have to fill in a tax return (Some on PAYE still have to do a tax return) a P45 is what you get when you leave a job. You are supposed to give it to your next employer so they can set you up on their PAYE system. If you are in full time employment you will be on PAYE. If you have been sent a tax return you must fill it in.

I'll help further if you be more specific:

Are you a full time employee on PAYE, ie do you have payslips?

In the case of casual work you will have tax deducted by the employer and you will be given a payslip. Keep it and depending on other income you could get the tax back.

If your employment is in fragmented chunks throughout the year it may well be the case that you are owed a refund. In this case you can ask for a tax return. Hope this helps get back if you need further help.

Thanks Loosehead, you are very helpful. So I don't do anything until tax return paperwork comes to me.
If you do not get sent a tax return after April 5th, you can still ask for one. The onus is on you so don't wait for the revenue.
