would not working, ie being on beneifts, go against you when applying for credit of any kind?

Even if you have a good credit rating, being on benefits would generally exclude you from credit because a potential lender would assume that you would be unable to meet repayments.

Do not be tempted by one of the loan sharking outfits that lend at extortionate rates. If you believe that you can afford repayments then work out how much you think you could repay and save it for say 10 weeks. If you managed ok, then you where right in the amount you selected and you now have 10 times that amount, continue doing the same. You will save the amount you want and pay no interest. 

 What I'm saying is if you have spare money, save it, don't use it to pay interest on a loan just because you want the money now.

In a word, yes. Many lenders will ask "are you in employment" as part of any application. Being on benefits doesn't guarantee that you'll be refused credit but I'd expect it to be taken into account.
