Is there a way that I can check if a charge has been made on my property.

Yes. Pay for and download the Title Regiser from here.
http://www.landregistry.gov.uk/

I think you can check with the land registry.

That would depend on whether the property is in joint names and someone wasn't showing the other the letters.

Oh no it wouldn't. It would still always show on the title register held by the Land Registry.
