Old Dept

A dept recovery agency has contacted me about a dept that my ex husband and I had in 1990. I thought this was paid. He left me in thounsands of pounds worth of dept and skipped the country. I had to sell my house and car to pay off all the dept and start again b y borrowing £3000 for a deposit for a home for myself and my daughter. In May this year the agency threatend to take my home off me and take me to court for the amount due albeit at a reduced amount. I am now disabled and live on state benefits. I requested a copy of signitures which they have now sent me. I haven't the money or the will to pay them. My ex is back in this country and has paid them a small amount i.e. £5 every now and again by cheque. Is there anyway I can get rid of this. Ideas please. It really is upsetting me.

You don't say who your original debt was with but it sounds like they have sold the debt on to a debt collection agency.
Firstly - do you owe this money?
If you do, then the bad news is that old debts never go away. You mustn't bury your head in the sand and ignore it.
I think your best bet is to contact your local Citizens Advice Bureau. They will have a member of staff dedicated to debt problems who will act as go-between, and will know the ropes and terminology. If you owe, it, you'll have to pay it, but the CAB will be able to negotiate a repayment plan that hopefully, you can afford, even if it's only a few pounds each week.
DO NOT use any of the so called debt management firms that advertise everywhere as they'll cost you an arm and a leg.
