Chelsea building society

My wife and her boyfriend at the time took a mortgage out 20 years ago. She split with him 2 months later. He stayed on in the house for 10 more years with various lodgers and girlfriends. My wife never had any contact with him or the building society since then...

Apparently the property was repossesed in 1998. The chelsea building society are now chasing my wife for 20k of this debt.

The chelsea are threatening to take out a charge on our hose if necessary. However she doesnt work and I am not at all happy paying this debt or having a charge on my house for a debt that was nothing to do with me !!

Can anyone offer any advice?

By the way my wife does accept that legally she was responsible but we feel the amount is competely disproportionate.

many thanks

Ian

in what way do you think its disproportionate?

If its because she was only living there a short time then you have to accept that she wouldnt have had to pay at all if she had taken her name from the mortgage.

if she accepts that legally it is her debt, then i dont understand what the problem is really (apart from paying!)
how much was the mortgage for, are you saying it was less than 20,000?

is your mortgage a joint one with her? if so they can put a charging order on the house

have they chased the other party for the debt?
