However if the land is unregistered, this doesn't work.
In which case it's very hit and miss I'm afraid.
Ask neighbours?
Ask down the pub?
See if any mail's being delivered there?
Ask the tenants?
Etc.

yes but 99.99% is registered, I'd start at the land registry, then borrow builders crystal ball.

Wishful thinking by the Land Registry.
According to their own figures 47% of land is registered (source LR 10-yr Strategic Plan Updated 2005-6).
