I recently bought a carpet by visa (egg) but when I got home I realized I didn't need the 170 I'd spent on underlay. I called them to ask for part of the order to be refunded but they said no, "we can't refund it's company policy". Where do I stand on this?

If the retailer sold you underlay and carpet , and you don't need the underlay because it is already part of the carpet, then you may have a case.
If you don't need it because of something they didn't know about then it is not their fault. Having said that, it sounds like you asked them to cancel the order almost right away (did you?) It sounds like they are being especially harsh.
If they haven't yet delivered the carpet, then I would have thought they would be more accommodating.
This is not specific advice, but if you look very closely at most carpets, you should be able to find a fault that would justify it being returned as "faulty". If they have any sense, you would think they would try to avoid upsetting customers unreasonably!!

Yes as soon as I got home (on a Saturday), half an hour after visting the store, I realized my mistake and called them to ask to refund the underlay. The Prophet sounds exactly like the salesman I bought it from, BenDToy sounds like a fellow representative of the British public who is sick and tired of the inflexible business practise, exhorbitant prices and poor service we have to experience on an almost day to day basis.
Of course I made a mistake, I'm not prepared to kick up a fuss this time as it will probably be a frustrating waste of time (I recently had a problem with Hotpoint and it took me over 6 months to get compensation and a product replaced). My only hope is that they now do a good job with the fitting. Can't see myself going back to that store again!
