What is an acceptable number of credit searches to have on your credit report, for example; over a period of 12 months?

There's no correct answer to this. It's purely down to the discretion of the lender, and each one has it's own criteria for what is acceptable. Common advice is that anything more than 1 or 2 searches in a 6 month period could reduce your likelihood to be offered credit.
