I know nothing of IBAS but he definitely needs advice. It may even be that he cannot be pursued for the debt at all. B & B are members of the Council of Mortgage Lenders and they have a voluntary code of practice on mortgage shortfalls which means they will not pursue the debt if they did not make contact within 6 years of the sale of the house. However, they may argued that their contact with his wife committed him as well, & I am not sure about this.

He could try to get some free advice from the local CAB or another debt advice service such as CCCS (see website). Others may post with some knowledge of IBAS.
