my mum has moved into/bought a new house and is getting letters regarding debts etc for the previous renting resident: she's worried that this might might affect the credit rating of the house - blacklisting etc. anyone know anything about this???

Tell her to get herself onto the electoral roll ASAP by visiting or ringing the council. Contact the mailing preference service so you don't get loads of junk mail, and contact your post office by letter to the local postmaster., stating that you are no longer willing to accept fmail sent for Mrs Smith etc and list the names of the people. Good luck - as long as a company has an address to write to they will be very " thick" at removing your address from a database, as it at least gives them somewhere to attempt to chase the debt. I once had the the Inland Revenue and "the baliffs" knock for a previous owner. The I R were the nicer of the two!
just so that you are aware: houses don't get blacklisted - only people. So long as your mum doesn't have the same name as the previous people, her credit will not get affected
Years ago I moved to a house ( bought it) and 'men' called to collect cash.
I was a bit naive then and did not just tell then to 'F 'off, never let anyone in your house, even a foot in the door.
I informed them of the solicitor who dealt with the sale, that's all. That is all I knew anyway.
But it is not a nice experience.It will stop if you are firm and tell the facts that you know.
