If I have invested 9000 pounds at 250 pounds a month in a 'share save scheme' that is due to mature this year. How many shares can I sell before I start owing the tax man money. Is it just the capital gains limit.(8500) or can I sell the value of my investment plus capital gains limit (17500)

thanks

You start owing the taxman money when your GAIN - that is the difference between how much you bought them for and the price you sell them for - is more than 8500.

So yes 17500 in your case.

Thanks for the quick response. Does that apply even though my last payment was effectively last month? Thanks again

And...we are buying them at a rate set 3 yeays ago 105p now worth 300p

Cheers

Your capital gain IS the 17500. On each share sold you would make 1.95 of capital gain. To avoid CGT this year, you could decide to sell 8500/1.95 shares now, which would use up your whole allowance this year. This is 4358 shares. Remember that the 300p current price could go up or down during this year.
