Anyone read any of his books - I've just read the one entitled IN THE MOOD - its brilliant, great if you come from Yorkshire and want a real reminder of how life was back in the 50's. I think he's such a witty writer - can anyone suggest any of his other books as a good read ? Thanks

One of my all time favourite books is Office Life by Keith Waterhouse. I have read it over and over again. Not read In The Mood - I'll look out for it.
I loved There is a Happy Land, which I think is his first novel, about growing up in Leeds. City Lights, the first part of his autobiography, is good too, but particularly for fellow Loiners.
I suppose he will be best remembered for Billy Liar (a novel as well as a play & a film) & Jeffrey Barnard is Unwell (for TV as well as a play.) He has had a regular column for the Nazi, sorry right wing, Daily Mail for many years now.

I remember reading one of his books years ago,but I can't remember the title. The bit I remember is where the hero gets a date with a girl he works with. They go to the cinema, and he thinks he's doing really well when he slips his arm around her shoulder. Then he gets a bit daring and, meeting no resistance, gets his hand inside her bra. Then he is stumped because he doesn't know what to do next.Shortly after he realises that she has been asleep all the time.

oopos sorry Marwel - don't know what happened with my last post - I can tell you that the book you refer to is IN THE MOOD - the one I commented on at the top of this posting. He did go to the cinema with his girl and get to first or second base as he called it. Not only did he get his hand inside her bra but he hit on something that he thought was the jackpot and started fiddling with it - only to be asked later by the girl "what did he find so fascinating about the mole under her arm." Simply brilliant !
