I'm going to start investing some money and I've heard of this type of account, although the source was US based is this type of account available in the UK?

Yes, these accounts are available in the uk, the High Street banks offer them, usually only for large amounts of money though - ie �50k plus, and you have to be able to tie your money up for a fixed amount of time.
