hi All, I was wondering what everyone pays for their house contents insurance. I have a one bedroom flat, nothing particularly valuable, and I wondered roughly what I should expect to pay per month?

I pay £18 a month with the post office for a 2.5 bedroom cottage - covering an extensive whisky collection and game collection - before I added them in it was only £9 a month

Question Author

As I thought – the quote I was given is £30 a month and I'm not paying that! Although I'm not quite sure how much they have estimated I am covered for.

I was asked to estimate the worth of the contents before and after the collections were added.

Do a comparison on the comparison websites

i pay 37.50 PM for a 3 bedrrom house with accidental away from home and emergency cover

I am only paying £37pm for a 5 bed house.

I have home and contents paid in one payment for 4 bed detached house with accidental n emergency etc. Last year I paid £194 in total for the year. (£16/£17 a month) That was cover up to million pounds for building and up to £50,000 for contents

Back in May, GoCompare was citing the average cost of contents insurance as £57 per year:
https://www.gocompare.com/home-insurance/how-much-does-home-insurance-cost/

That seems to be consistent with what Unbiased was quoting only last month: "The average cost of contents-only cover is between £59 and £66 per year"
https://www.unbiased.co.uk/discover/mortgages-property/ownership-improvements/how-much-is-home-insurance-on-average-and-what-does-it-cover

I pay RIAS £8.75 per month to insure both my house (a one-bedroom 'starter home') and its contents.

just realised it includes buildings on mine too so ignore my answer

That looks very expensive bednobs, I pay a lot less than that for a 4 bed house. Have you been with the same comany a while? Loyalty is punished in the insurance industry.

unfortunately, i have had issues with flooding and fire (in a previous house) and i think im probably still being punished:)

plus my experience means i am insured to the hilt

and it includes the broker's fee too

2 bed flat, just ordinary possessions, nothing of great worth. £40 per year with Saga.

^^^^ contents only

KaraMia would love to know your insurer that seems very cheap I am more than double that for roughly the same cover plus legal cover.

The price can vary depending on the estimated value of contents (you estimate yourself, so there's no need to accept a falsely high estimate), the size of the property, the location (whether or not there's lots of burglaries), local flood risk, inflation effects etc, presence or not of burglar alarms, type of locks you have etc.

If you get a quote online you can alter the contents value and see what happens.

Giggsie - I am with Sheila's wheels for both buildings and contents currently. (But not with them for my car insurance as weren't the cheapest for that. Very confusing I know!) I protect no claims also each year.

Thanks karamia good to know we are with saga not cheap.

Surely you pick a company becase they are good not because they are cheap?

Mine was building and contents as well, didn't read the question properly.

Mine is £77.10 a year for contents cover and this covers me for £100,000.Roughly £6.43 a month.

That's for a 2-bed bungalow.
