Apply for a Basic Account (no debit card) or an account with an Electron or Solo card? (they're both basic debit cards)

Or, if you really want limited facilities and a guarantee of no overdraft or credit and don't mind ONLY having a cashcard then have your wages paid into an easily accessible savings account such as (from memory...) Abbey's Flexible Saver.

Due to the reform in how state benifits are paid all banks must now offer a basic account, this will mean no cheques etc. The only card you will be issued with is a ATM card that can only be used in the issuing banks ATM machines.

NATWEST do a basic account for general banking. IE direct debits, standing orders and solo withdrawing. No credit is offered. This is called a STEP account.

I use Nationwide flex account, this is a basic account without any overdraft facilities, but you can set up direct debits and you do get a cash card to use at any cash machine. You might also want to consider a post office card account. The only down side to this is that you can only draw out your money from an open post office. I got caught out by this a few weeks ago when my village sub post office was shut for a few days for re-decorating and I had to get a bus into the nearest town (10 miles away) just to draw some cash out for groceries!

Just set up the normal bank account and ask for a debit card. Check if there is a delay in the time the bank issues you with a card. I am going back about 15 years now when I set up my bank account and they did not issue you with a debit card till at least 3 months to see if you could be trusted or not.

This is stupid because you need a debit card nowadays so make sure they issue you with a card within a week or two of opening your account.
