Aldi Cashing In On Its Popularity?

I am a big fan of Aldi and can't fault the quality of their household goods such as dishwasher tablets and detergents but I think the prices are steadily rising, eg 45p for a tin of tomatoes, and the quality and shelf life of fresh fruit and veg is not what it was. The fruit and veg I buy is going 'off' within a day or two, even though it looks good at the time of purchase and I store it carefully.

Anyone finding this?

I haven't got a Lidl near me although one is due to open next year.

Yes, HC.. I've noticed it over the past 9 months.. Gradual as you say. 5p or 10p on a lot of the products I buy. ASDA's own washing up liquid is as cheap as Aldi's now

After hearing everyone raving about aldi, I thought I would give it another chance. I went in a couple of years ago and wasn't at all impressed. However, I was assured that since then they had got their act together. I didn't like it at all and I doubt I will be rushing back. I found that the prices were on a par with most supermarkets basic range, and the place was very untidy. I couldn't see what all the fuss was about, to be honest.

I have to agree about the keeping qualities of some of the fruit and veg...is it because they don't refrigerate "in store" and possibly in distribution? Having said that..turnover of the fresh stuff seems very quick in store.

ki dont rate aldi at all, i do like lidl though, their instore bakery is excellent and you can get a really decent rye loaf.

Aldi in Germany have a very good own label which doesn't seem to appear much in the UK. they stock cheap UK brands. Lidl have more of their own brand, Dulano, and I find them of a better quality. It was inevitable that once they established themselves as serious rivals to the big boys they would look to cash in by price increases and lower quality.

I only shop at Lidl as we don't have many Aldi's where I live. But this is the 21st Century.......is 45p really such a huge amount to pay for a can of tomatoes ?
