When they're already in a safe country?

Whilst I may understand the plight of a few who may deserve asylum, are the French acting as a result of the Euro elections?

The French action is not as a result of the elections. It was planned some time ago. It was in the news that the immigrants' campsites are disease ridden (not surprisingly) and that action was going to be taken to clear them. The French action is not as a result of the elections. It was planned some time ago. It was in the news that the immigrants' campsites are disease ridden (not surprisingly) and that action was going to be taken to clear them. I don't usually hold much of a brief for the French but the people of Calais have my sympathy. Until a few years ago it was a half decent town which made a lot of money from UK daytrippers, weekenders and those passing through to and from other parts of the continent. It has one or two decent restaurants and hotels. When I go there now I get out of the town as soon as I disembark the ferry (in fact I don't even enter it, I go straight down the main road away from the port). I will not even park in the High Street for five minutes. The small businesses in Calais must have lost a fortune because of this problem.

Why do the immigrants want to come to the UK? Well when they are interviewed they all say, almost without exception, that they believe they will receive a more cordial welcome here and that they will be able to find somewhere to live. And of course they are right. Many of them have friends and relatives already here and they know they will be well cared for if they should ever make it.

Some people here in the UK say that makes them proud. It makes me sick.
Me too NJ. They want to come here because were soft and stupid enough to accommodate them, give them our money and soften the laws of the land for them IMO, who wouldn't want to go to a country who gives that and more and with no medical checks to see what they are bringing in to burden our NHS with!
They want to come here because they see us as a beacon of liberty. Here they will be free to follow their dreams.
We should be proud that our reputation as a decent, liberal, country extends across the world.
More a reputation of a soft touch than anything else SR!
>>> Here they will be free to follow their dreams.

Dreams of being given a house and benefits for nothing.

Glad you are happy to be paying for it (we are ALL paying for it).
yes they are, Hollande if its his doing wants to be seen to be tough, tough on us of course as where else will they go, but here at any opportunity.
/Why Are They Trying To Get Into U K?/
Why wouldn't they. UK is seen as the economic promised land where they will not be routinely abused by the authorities to the extent experienced in their homelands. If I was native to one of these appalling countries I'd try to get to UK.
If they find us a decent, liberal country why do they try to change us as soon as they reach our shores. The first thing they unpack is a big attitude.
In general they want to change our constitution, culture, religion and laws whilst having the LIBERTY to criticise this country and grab as much un entitled benefits as they can grab.Send them back to find their dreams in a hookah pipe.I don't respect or wish Shariah law and all the barbarism that comes with it in my country of birth.
sandyr, we are a soft touch, sorry we can't keep on taking in the world and his wife, they could end up with a worse life than you can possibly imagine, if they are illegals what kind of work will they get, where do they live, 10 to a room in some relatives back garden shed, come on be realistic.
//We should be proud that our reputation as a decent, liberal, country extends across the world. //

Well we have seen what happens to liberals.

Agree entirely NJ.
/// The migrants have been trying to get to Britain, and say they have nowhere else to go after the camps are destroyed. ///

May I suggest from whence they came?
This sort of thing is why we must close our borders and reform/leave the EU. We in Britain obey most of the EU dictats however bonkers, the others obey the ones that suit them. Oddly enough, the only one that is actually helpful to Britain is the one we ignore! The EU says that asylum seekers must apply in the first safe country, that is hardly ever UK, therefore we should send them back to France where the French can accept their applications or send them back if they entered through another "safe" country, and so on. End of.
the French won't do it, pass the buck seems to be the order of the day.

You are naive enough to think that are you Sandy?

Most of the World hate us, the old Empire countries especially, except of course when they want to take up residence here, but even then we are not liked enough for them to try and image us.
It is one thing to be proud of being a liberal country but another to be ripped off by scroungers. How sad that we cannot differentiate between those who come prepared to work and those who come just to grab all they can.
Couldn't have put it better TTT.

And it rather looks like the electorate are finally getting a voice after being silenced by right-on liberals masquerading as New Labour.
if you had nothing and there was a chance you could better yourself in another country would you not try and get to that country

> when you ain't got nothing you got nothing to lose
how do they raise thousands of pounds to get across the world to get here then, they borrow, beg money off family, because its a long, fraught with danger journey from places like Afghanistan, and they have to pay through the nose for the privilege of being shut in a box, lorry, or anything that will transport them across the world, they don't just jump on the nearest plane and land in France, or here.
No but they often land in France, apply there!
after travelling over land and sea, if coming on a plane they would have to have travel documents, passport, if none then the French can't send them any place, nor can we.
