Bankrupcy lasts for one year but it remains on your credit file for six years, it should be the last resort.
Usually it is 1 year, but if you are deemed to be failing to co-operate with the Official Receiver they can apply to Court to get your discharge delayed.

Also, you may have to make payments towards your debts for a maximum of 3 years - including after you are discharged.
