Iirc each year a random sample of folk get self assessment forms even though they are on paye.

Sheesh! Do they? Well they chose me AND my husband this year & last! I called them today and they said not to to complete it and that they won't send any more.... we'll see...

They do pick a small sample each year and send them a return just to check things are working ok. However, in this case it's clearly that they either didn't register that you had ceased self employment or you never actually told them. You have now, I'm sure they'll cease.
