Old £20 Notes

Whilst clearing out my mother-in-laws house we have found £700 in old £20 notes, we think from 1996 as there was a letter with them. Does anyone know if we can change them or is it too late?!!!

Go to your Bank and pay them into your Account. There should not be a problem but do it now as all £20 notes must have Adam Smith on the back.

If the £20 notes date from 1996 they will feature Michael Faraday on the reverse. These banknotes were withdrawn from circulation in 2001. Fortunately Bank of England issued notes retain their face value for all time, however it is highly unlikely that any institution other than the BoE will exchange banknotes of such an age.

The Edward Elgar £20 is being withdrawn at the end of June and for several months after banks, building societies and post offices will allow these banknotes to be used for customer transactions, however once this "grace period" has elapsed it will again only be the BoE that will exchange the withdrawn notes.

Either your bank (if it's a clearing bank) or a Post Office will take the notes.

Thank you everyone for your help and advice - we sent the old money to the Bank of England we've just received a cheque which we can now cash :)
