It should be free on the basis that you will buy products that the IFA will make money on...Be warned, DH and I looked into this when we retired and had a lump sum to invest. We talked to our bank, a couple of IFA's and a couple of other investment organisations. We looked at what they advised us to do and what THEY would make out of their suggestions (and they would have made the money regardless of whether we made any or not!!) and said okay, that's how much we can afford to lose or pay in fees if we make our own investments before we are any worse off. Then we did our homework and went for it. Surprise, we are better off than if we had let the experts do it, with no previouss experience although we did do loads of research.
You should be able to choose between paying a one off fee and paying commision or possibly a mixture of both.
