542L probably.

Divorced and your age are irrelevant until you are 60 or blind I think.
543L

Your marital status has nothing to do with it

its 522L is that right sounds okay abdul
Question Author
thought over fifty had something to do with it
Well if it was 542 (or 3) it means you can earn 200 pounds more without paying tax saving you 20% on 2 tonne.

Therefore 40 quid a year, which is a meal out I suppose.

Give your local tax office a ring.
It's a bit light.

Do you have any other income, or owe the tax man money?

nope looking at my p60 for 2008 and it says final tax code 522L
Phone your tax office and ask for an explanation
522L is the correct code for 2007-2008.
Question Author
ethel if its in my favour best not ring lol
The lower the tax code the more tax you pay - if that is for this year you will pay 80 more, not less.

My guess it is for the period ending April 2008
522L is the correct standard code for a taxpayer under 65 for the year ended 5th April 2008.

The confusion arose because the original post asked what is should be and everyone presumed that meant NOW when in fact it meant last tax year. Badly worded question.

The correct code now would be 604L but that's due to the Chancellor amending it recently under pressure about the removal of the 10% band. It would have been 543L initially and may well still be for many of us.
