jointly liable

My boyfriend is in the process of getting divorced, he took out a loan to pay off some things and pay for his ex's plastic surgery, someone told me that the law has changed and that she can be liable for the loan if she had some benefit from it....is this true?...seems unfair that he has to pay the loan off for the next 3 years and she gets off scott free....

has she ever had to or been expected to pay anything towards the loan? If not then surely she could say it was a gift?
